not very creative, February 15, 2010

This review is from: The Everything Creative Wedding Ideas Book (Paperback)

I bought this book for $3 in the bargain section of the bookstore. I later donated it. Even though it was cheap, it wasn’t worth the space on my bookshelf!

It’s not that the book is bad. It’s a decent assortment of wedding planning tips and ideas. The problem is, it’s not really that creative. The book basically starts from the assumption that most weddings are exactly the same, and that by deviating slightly, you’re being extremely innovative. So it will give suggestions like including your pets in the bridal party, or holding your reception at a museum instead of a country club. Things that most people immersed in planning a wedding have at least seen suggested before. Every now and then, there are a few more unusual suggestions, but even those are mostly impractical- like getting married while skydiving. Anybody who is going to do something extreme like that will have thought of it themselves without needing to buy a book. It also just seems unoriginal- like the authors were struggling to come up with the “wackiest” thing they could think of but fell back on a cliche.

Way after I’d already gotten rid of this book, somebody gave me a copy of The Everything Weddings Book, which is really, really dogmatic and traditional- it actually flat out tells you what color shoes you will be wearing- dyed the exact shade of white to perfectly match your white dress, of course! It all makes sense now- this book IS creative from that perspective. So if you’re the type of bride who thinks it is outrageous and daring and novel to wear blue shoes as your “something blue,” then this book is for you. If you think that idea seems a little predictable or tame, skip this book and just spend your time on [...]

A lot of a little but not a lot of anything, December 20, 2003

This book is an “ideas” book and is almost like a brainstorming session to get you going. If you were looking for inspiration you might be able to find it in here, but you will find yourself needing another resource quickly as the points discussed in this book are very brief. I’d say on average 1 to 2 paragraphs on each item point. If you’re going to buy this book I would look for a used copy.

Super Duper Wedding Book!, August 2, 2003

This book is awesome if you’re looking to plan an out-of-the ordinary wedding (something OTHER than what you’ll see in every single bridal magazine, that is). Every idea in this book is something you can take and make your OWN –just what the bride with a creative streak needs.
